Very soon World War I became trench warfare: troops came to a standstill and dug themselves in to protect themselves.
Lots of trenches were dug and adapted around Ypres, on both sides of the front.
The arch formed by these front lines is called the Ypres Salient, the Ypres Arch. It is located about 4 kilometers from the heart of the city center.
After World War I, a lot of trenches disappeared as the local population resumed "normal life. In the process, a lot of trenches were closed and the land was reused for farming.
In a few places in and around Ypres you can still see and visit trenches today. They were preserved in the landscape or restored to give you a good view of them.
