Accessibility
Ypres is located at the end of the A19 (Kortrijk E17 junction) and is easily accessible by car.
Ypres is also easily accessible by train and public transport from De Lijn.
From Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide you can take a boat to the Ypres marina.
Accessibility of the city itself
The city center of Ypres dates back to the Middle Ages. The streets and sidewalks were rebuilt after the First World War following this medieval example. Original and typical materials and cobblestones were used.
The 17th-century fortifications surrounding the city served as defensive walls.
Because of this, the center is not perfectly accessible.
However, many efforts were made to make accessibility as optimal as possible, without compromising the charming character of the center streets.
- The fortifications are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers in 9 places.
- The In Flanders Fields Museum and Yper Museum have an elevator.
Some wheelchairs are also available on loan for both museums. Ask for info at the museum desk. - The area under the Menin Gate is easily accessible for wheelchair users.
For people in wheelchairs, seats can be assigned at the front. Speak to the stewards before the start of the ceremony. - Most cemeteries are accessible with a little help here and there. In many cases, an alternate entrance with ramp is provided at the cemetery.
- Trenches are not accessible because of their construction.
