Most hospitable city in Belgium 2021, 2022 and 2024

Hospitality

A couple lies relaxed in bed with a large mural of poppies in the background.
It's at the top of the list of many lodging owners in Ypres. It is now also evident from the reviews of Ypres lodgings on booking.com: Ypres is the most hospitable city in Belgium, followed by Hasselt and Bruges.

"That little extra something more, that's what we're going for."
Ypres accommodation providers welcome all guests with a smile and help them with any question.

We stopped by a number of Ypres hotels, B&Bs and vacation rentals to ask what hospitality really means to them.

Albion Hotel - Ruth

Hospitality is expressed in all the services we offer. We take an interest in each guest's visit.

Are you a cyclist? Then we share our own favorite bicycle tours, with of course the necessary stops for those who are hungry or thirsty.
Hikers we send not only to the fortresses that are nearby. We also always dot the Verdronken Weide. This area just outside the city walls is a relief full of beautiful nature. We also look a little further, to the hills around Ypres: the Stiltepad in Heuvelland is also among our personal favorites!
Feeling hungry? We know all the restaurants in town! The tasty spots are not just limited to the Grote Markt. We have a delicious tip for everyone.

Our slogan is"Coming home to Ypres!" And we show that too.
Our hotel is a real family hotel with mom Chris and my sister Daphne together at the helm.
For our breakfast we pull out all the stops: milk and yogurt from the local farmer, cheese and meat from around the corner and crusty fresh bread from the bakery nearby,.... Everything as local as possible.
What is unique with us is Mom Chris' homemade bread pudding at breakfast. Our regular guests are as enamored of it as we are.
Also as a non-guest you can join us for breakfast, ready to explore Ypres.
In the bar, local drinks have an edge: the beers of Kazematten, St-Bernardus or a gin from Ypres or Poperinge. We consciously choose these local products. This way our guests get a taste of the Westhoek.

B&B Back2Front - Katja

Woman with orange sweater smiles and holds a bowl with pieces of fruit in a kitchen with wooden wall.
Every Sunday morning I bake a fresh apple pie for my guests. I love it immensely myself and also my guests can "taste" this little extra.
I also give my guests the best tips for THEIR vacation during their stay.
I ask about their interests during breakfast and then tailor my tips to their needs and available time.
Is it about World War I, the Middle Ages, cycling, hiking or something else... I have a suitable offer for every type of visitor.
I often send those tips via smartphone, that way we also save extra paper and are a bit more conscious with our nature.

What I also like is to refer my guests to locals. This is not only about places to shop or eat, but also places where exceptional encounters can take place. I love hearing the stories of my guests afterwards.

Maison HB - Els

Two glass jars with chocolate mousse and whipped cream on a wooden board with text Maison HB.
For me, hospitality is first and foremost taking care of my guests.
A few weeks in advance they receive a Maison HB Inspiration magazine from me. In it I tell the story of our vacation rental and give tips for trips, breakfast spots, walks and so much more.
The tourist brochure is also forwarded in advance.

Shortly before the guests arrive, I send a message so the guests have my number and can reach me more easily. It is always easy to have my number so that my guests can easily reach me with all their questions as well. As a hostess, I can be reached 24 hours a day, if needed.

All my guests also receive a welcome surprise.
That can be a Wipers Times (the local beer brewed near Maison HB), as well as a homemade pastry or delicious chocolate mousse.

Of course I also provide the basics: arrange a cab, rent bikes, book brewery tours, provide hiking and biking maps,....
The beds, bed and bath linen are of high quality at Maison HB. Cutlery is also doubled, just in case.
The WIFI is unlimited and free and I am flexible with check-in and check-out times. Thus, I make every effort to provide my guests with a top stay in Ypres.

Hotel Ambrosia - Vincent

Man in yellow sweater displays a folded visitor's guide at Hotel Ambrosia.
Couples give us a score of 9.5 on Booking.com. We score especially very high on our location and the meals are also highly recommended with us.
So our hotel is just a stone's throw from the Grote Markt, yet it is very quiet and all the highlights of Ypres are nearby. The Last Post at the Menin Gate can be reached in a few minutes' walk.

We provide our guests with an extra map with information about the highlights of Ypres.
Top of the list is of course the Menin Gate, with Last Post.
Another thing we always recommend is a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery, in Passchendaele. That is the largest military cemetery in the world, just 14 km from Ypres.
Yet another tip is the In Flanders Fields Museum, on the Grote Markt.

Our tips also extend beyond Ypres. Especially if you stay several days in Ypres, it is blissful to further explore the Westhoek: cycling from Ypres to the hills or towards Diksmuide. But Poperinge is also worth a visit. In September it is hops time. Then you can visit the hop fields during the day. Then in the evening when you are sitting on a terrace in the shade of the Cloth Halls, you know where your local beer grew!

We also always provide information about parking.
Not everyone knows it's market day on Saturday, so we point our visitors to the nearest parking locations near the hotel.
