Introduction to Ypres

On this walk, the guide introduces you to the highlights of Ypres. He succinctly explains the rich history and takes the group to the little English church, Saint George's Memorial Church, among others. He shows the beautiful interior of St. Martin's Cathedral and of the Council Chamber in the Ypres Town Hall. A stop at the Grand Place with some history about the imposing Cloth Halls after which the walk concludes at the Menin Gate.

A medieval herald guides you through the rich past of medieval Ypres: you stroll along the majestic Cloth Hall, the impressive St. Martin's Cathedral, past the site of a former bathing furnace. Then it's through the Hall Court to the Godelievekapel and you end in the medieval lock room.

During this walk, the guide will take the group past the city's most important war memorials. The moving Menin Gate, the Irish Cross and the moody Saint George's Memorial Church are enduring witnesses to the city's war past. Meanwhile, the guide brings the story of the war and introduces you to some aspects of reconstruction. This walk is an excellent introduction or complement to a visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum.

The period 1940 - 1945 was also turbulent for Ypres. Not to the extent as the Great War, but important enough to include a monument to the deceased of World War II on the fortifications.

On and under the historic Ypres fortifications

The fortifications of Ypres are the best preserved in our country. Their story begins ten centuries ago, when the city emerged on the banks of the Ieperlee. The tourist fortress route is 4.5 km long and has 5 possible starting points. The walk goes past the Menin Gate, Castle moats and the bear's tenaille with the eye-catching passerelle over the fortress water. At the Lille Gate you will discover the lock room and the Gatekeeper's House.
It is also possible to shorten the route to two hours. You can then choose from:
- Ypres Fortresses: from Vauban to the present day.
Departure at the Reception Center De Kazematten to Menin Gate, visit ice cellar, via sneak passage to passarelle over Castle moat, over Vauban fortifications to Lille Gate. Via the Rijselstraat back to the Grote Markt. Possibly combined with a visit to the Brewery De Kazematten (more info under 'other activities').
- Ypres Fortresses: with Burgundian towers and lock room
Departure at the Kruitmagazijn. Pass Peace Bridge and proceed over Burgundy Fortresses to Bellepoort, along Majoorgracht to Burgundy Towers. Continue to British military cemetery. Via Rijselsestraat back to Grote Markt.
On tour with the beer master

Extra: Visit city brewery Kazematten, before or after your beer storytelling walk.
Bart Vermeulen, zythologist, beer sommelier and passionate storyteller, takes you on a tour of contemporary Ypres with one goal. With dozens of amusing anecdotes and historical stories, he will convince you that Ypres was and still is a beer city.
Will you join Bart or his colleagues on a beer-telling walk? And of course along the way we will taste the delicious beer of here! You can start or end the tour with a visit to the city brewery De Kazematten, where Bart is also a familiar face. Beer tasting tours and themed tastings can also be customized for each group.
The Night Watch: evening walk

The night watchman awaits you near the model, at the top of the steps at the Menin Gate. He will be there with halberd and flambeau at 8:30 pm, after the Last Post. He will guide you through the darkness of medieval Ypres and highlight some known and unknown medieval corners of Ypres.
Sneukelroute

The Sneukelroute is a three-hour walk through Ypres. To give visitors an extra treat during this
walking tour they are offered a delicacy here and there. The route takes the visitor past lesser known corners of Ypres.

On the Walk in Ypres

Practical: Running clothes and sports shoes definitely recommended (For our Dutch friends: the guide will take you on a run).
At Op de loop in Ieper, the entire history of Ypres is covered. Running is done in groups of 20 people maximum. You will run at a slow pace of 7 km per hour. Every 700 meters there is a stop to tell a story, anecdote or an interesting know-it-all. For example: Do you know
