Accessibility

The city center of Ypres dates back to the Middle Ages. The streets and sidewalks were rebuilt after World War I following this medieval example, using original and typical materials and cobblestones. Original and typical materials and cobblestones were used. The 17th century fortifications surrounding the city served as a defensive wall, making the center not perfectly accessible.

However, many efforts were made to make accessibility as optimal as possible, without compromising the charming character of the center streets.

  • The fortifications are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers in 9 places.

  • The In Flanders Fields Museum and Yper Museum have an elevator.
Some wheelchairs are also available on loan for both museums.
Ask for info at the museum desk.

  • The area under the Menin Gate is easily accessible for wheelchairs.
For people in wheelchairs, seats can be assigned at the front.
Speak to the stewards before the start of the ceremony.

  • Most cemeteries are accessible with a little help here and there. In many cases, an alternate entrance with ramp is provided in the cemetery.
